Walter Hamilton Esq. and Rohingya
Walter Hamilton Esq., the writer of The East Indian Gazetteer, wrote two volumes of ‘A Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Description of Hindostan, and the Adjacent Counties’, which were published by John Murray (London) in 1820. He also wrote ‘Concise dictionary of terms used in the arts and science’ in 1825, ‘Notes to Assist the Memory in Various Sciences’ in 1827, ‘The East Indian Gazetteer’ in 1828 and many other books and articles.
In the Pages 800 – 804 of the ‘A Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Description of Hindostan, and the Adjacent Counties’ Volume II, he wrote about Arakan where he mentioned the name of Rohingya. In page 802, he wrote that, “The native of Arracan Proper call their country Yekein; the Hindoos of Bengal, Rossan. The latter, who have settled in great numbers in Arracan, are dominated by the original inhabitants Kulaw Rakhang or unnaturalized Arracaners and Mahommedans, who have setled in the country, call themselves Rooinga, or native of Arracan.”
Read it, like it and share it as far as you can for the self-identification of our Rohingyas.
