The United Arab Emirates and Myanmar have agreed to establish a diplomatic relation which may enable further discussion of the Rohingya crisis.
On 10th of November 2020, UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh has signed a communique to establish the ties with her counterpart from Myanmar, U Kyaw Moe Tun in New York according to the official Emirati news agency Wam.
“They discussed the situation of the Rohingya and the need for opening channels of communication on an issue that is a matter of priority for the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation,” said the agency.
Earlier, during the pandemic, UAE has donated five tonnes of medical aid to Myanmar to fight against the deadly coronavirus. Ms Nusseibeh also expressed that, UAE was keen to work with Myanmar “to unlock future partnerships in serving the aspirations of the region’s countries and peoples”.
